Augusta, Maine

The Maine State House is a Neoclassical state capitol building, originally designed by Charles Bulfinch, and built between 1829-1832. The original Bulfinch building consisted of a two-story, pedimented portico, flanked by three-bay wings. At the center of the building was a low dome with a cupola. In 1889-1891, a two-story addition was added to the west elevation of the Bulfinch building. In 1909-1910, the original Bulfinch dome and cupola were removed, along with the north and south walls of the wings. At each end of the wings, new additions approximately 65 feet long and 75 feet wide were constructed. A new steel and concrete dome, 185 feet high, was built at the center of the building. The exterior of the Maine State House is clad with gray granite.
